Team Enigma members had support from 3M during their preparations for the finals, that included designing, constructing and racing a miniature Formula One ‘Car of the Future’.
The team won the 2016 UK finals held at the Silverstone circuit and went on to be nominated in five categories in the world finals, held in Texas in October. Enigma won the Enterprise Portfolio award, with the judges commending the clarity, professionalism and documentation of the submission.
In addition, team members Cora Morrow, Nathan Bryce and Katelyn Chelberg were among just nine students accepted for the prestigious Randstad Williams Engineering Academy.
Enigma’s 21cm long F1 car is powered by CO² and took 500 hours to build. During the production stage, 3M Innovation leader, Ben Watson, shared his business and engineering knowledge with the team and 3M STEM ambassadors Kim Brewer, Neale Griffiths and Andy Henry helped them with personal development.
Said the team’s design engineer Nathan Bryce: “We had a fantastic and life-changing experience at the world finals and can't begin to thank Ben, Kim and the team enough for all the help and support they give us on our journey to Texas.
“I can say without a shadow of a doubt that our score greatly improved thanks to the input from the team at 3M and we are all eternally grateful.”
F1 in Schools was developed to help change perceptions of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects by creating an exciting learning environment.
