As reported in The Telegraph online, scientists from Stanford University in California have proved that binding your feet with medical tape is the most effective way to prevent blisters.
The findings follow 40 years of research into blister prevention and may incentivise runners to abandon plasters, lubricants and adhesive pads in favour of reasonably priced tape.
Lead researcher, Dr Grant Lipman, worked as an emergency doctor for endurance running events. After interviewing runners over many years, he realised that binding the feet with tape was anecdotally the most effective solution for blister prevention, so he set out to prove it.
The Telegraph article reveals that when he tested medical tape on endurance runners, Dr Lipman and his researchers found that just 24 per cent developed blisters in the taped areas compared with 63 per cent in areas that were left untaped.
