Diagnostics have taken on a new dimension with the launch of the 3M™ Littmann® Cardiology IV™ Stethoscope that can detect high-frequency sounds as subtle as the flutter of a hummingbird’s wings.
The millions of healthcare professionals around the globe who use stethoscopes as a first-line diagnostic instrument have a new tool in their armoury with the 3M Littmann Cardiology IV Stethoscope.
The stethoscope has been engineered to help clinicians detect hard-to-hear sounds in the body, such as the high-frequency sound of a faint heart murmur at 48 dB(A), the equivalent to hearing a hummingbird’s wings fluttering.
“The improved acoustic performance of the Cardiology IV stethoscope reflects our commitment to enhancing auscultation technology,” said Jonathan Neachell, West Europe business manager for 3M Littmann Stethoscopes. “Sometimes the quietest sounds in the human body are the most critical for precise diagnoses.”
The new stethoscope has a versatile chestpiece with both paediatric and adult sides as well as turnable diaphragms, enabling clinicians to hear different frequency sounds simply by changing the amount of pressure applied. In addition, the soft ear tips form an acoustic seal that helps shut out external noises.
Jonathan adds: “With 2016 marking the stethoscope’s 200th anniversary, it’s a good time to promote the importance of auscultation skills. With the 3M Littmann Learning Institute App from the 3M Health Care Academy you can listen to real heart and lung sounds, test your knowledge and develop diagnostic skills using patient scenarios.”
