The gases that cause the greenhouse effect are called greenhouse gases. If the world had no greenhouse gases the surface temperature would be an average of –18°C. In freezing cold temperatures like this, life and plants would struggle to survive. Today's average surface temperature is +15°C because of greenhouse gases. Evidence shows this temperature is gradually rising and this could be a problem.
